The American Academy of Dermatology’s (AADs) newest guideline aimed to analyze awareness of other health conditions associated with atopic dermatitis (AD) in adults. Based on the strength and quality of evidence, the AAD work group released statements on associations of AD with comorbid conditions in adults:

  • AD in adults is associated with asthma; greater AD severity is associated with increasing asthma prevalence.
  • High-quality evidence was found of the link between AD and food allergies; greater AD severity is said to be associated with increasing food allergy prevalence.
  • AD in associated with allergic rhinitis; its association with allergic conjunctivitis is uncertain.
  • AD is also associated with alopecia areata and urticaria.
  • AD is likely to be associated with hypertension, coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction.
  • AD could also be linked to peripheral artery disease and congestive heart failure, with greater AD severity associated with a greater magnitude of association.
  • AD may be associated with thromboembolic diseases and even with cardiovascular death.
  • Additionally, AD could be correlated to the occurrence of obesity, dyslipidemia and diabetes, although its association with metabolic syndrome remains uncertain.
  • Furthermore, AD was found to be associated with osteoporosis and bone fractures.
  • AD also increased the susceptibility to skin infection.
